Red Cedar Speedway Baxter Speed Shop Night
By Brad Erickson

Menomonie, Wisconsin (May 03, 2019) The Red Cedar Speedway presented Baxter Speed Shop night as the WISSOTA Pure Stocks, Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Modifieds, Late Models and RCS Hornets were in action. Once again, the racing surface was smooth, fast, and multi-grooved which offered terrific racing. The feature winners were Dustin Doughty, Curt Myers, Ashley Anderson, and Pat Doar. Rains began to fall very early into the Midwest Modified feature ending the night and the Pure Stocks and Hornets didn’t get the opportunity to race their main events.

The Late Model heats were won by John Kaanta and Jimmy Mars as Jesse Glenz and Mike Prochnow led the field to green at feature time. After an aborted start racing action was underway with Jesse Glenz leading lap one. However, after starting fourth, Pat Doar made an outstanding move and blasted to the lead on lap two. He quickly left no doubt it was his night as he drove into the night and left the others to battle for the runner up position.

Glenz held second over Prochnow as Rick Hanestad moved to fourth and Mars cracked the top five after starting eighth. Hanestad used the low line to overtake third and Mars inched closer slipping into fourth. Hanestad was strong as he closed on Glenz and took the runner up position. Suddenly, a caution flag flew and robbed Doar of his half lap advantage on the field. On the restart, it was Doar leading as Glenz powered back under Hanestad for second.

Mars had mechanical issues and came to a stop at the end of the front stretch. As the field streaked by, Denny Cutsforth was not able to clear the 28 machine and extremely hard contact was made in a violent crash. The red flag flew, and both drivers were able to walk away but their racecars were heavily damaged.

A green, white, checkered finish saw Doar masterful and untouched for the victory. Glenz was second and Hanestad third as John Kaanta made a late race pass for fourth over Mike Prochnow.
Michael Truscott and Ashley Anderson won the WISSOTA Modified heats as Steve Hallquist and Kerry Halopka sat on the front row for the feature. It was Hallquist to the lead, but a first lap caution flag reset the field for a complete restart. Once again, Hallquist controlled the start as they went three-wide behind him for second. Mike Anderson took the runner up position as Ashley Anderson settled into third.

Mike Anderson stalked the leader down low as Hallquist used the high groove to lead the way. Mike Anderson worked under the leader for the point as the caution flag flew for Jordan Hessler and Hallquist was given the lead back for the restart. Mike Anderson once again went to work on the leader and drove under him for the point as Ashley Anderson followed him through into second. However, once again, the caution flag flew, this time for Steve Lavasseur, and Hallquist was restored as the leader.

A green, white, checkered finish was called by track officials with six laps in the books. On the restart, Hallquist dropped down to block Mike Anderson from driving under him for the point. Hallquist didn’t get a good drive through turn two and with Mike Anderson pinned down, a wise and prepared Ashley Anderson pounced and drove from third to first on an impressive move. As Ashley Anderson drove the remaining two laps to victory, Hallquist recovered and finished second. Michael Truscott had a great run on the final lap and overtook Mike Anderson for third at the finish line. Kerry Halopka rounded out the top five in the eight-lap event which was shortened due to time and the track racing against impending weather.

Jim Harris and Chad Gullixson won their respective heats in the Super Stocks and Rick Hallquist and Gullixson led them to green in their main event. It was Hallquist after one lap into the feature but Gullixson used the highline to overtake the lead by the end of lap two. Nick Oreskovich drove into second as Curt Myers closed from sixth.

A caution flag flew for a pair of spinning cars which saw Kyle Copp called for the foul. On the restart, it was Myers passing the leader on the backstretch. Myers increased his advantage up front, but a ninth starting Jesse Redetzke was coming through the field and overtook the third position. Redetzke continued his charge into second, but a caution once again slowed the pace. The restart saw Myers in the lead as the field went four-wide for second through turns three and four. The field didn’t clear the corner though as there was a multi-car spin behind them.

A green, white, checkered restart, which was the order of the evening, saw Myers control the field to the win. It was Gullixson racing back to the runner up position for a very fine showing on the night. Redetzke came home in third and although Tommy Richards dove low to try to steal the position, Oreskovich came home in fourth and Richards settled for fifth.

The Street Stocks saw Dustin Doughty, Hunter VanGilder, and Karl Genett capture heats as VanGilder and Parker Anderson were side by side on the front row at the start of the feature. VanGilder led at the start but a lap two caution slowed the pace. The restart saw Doughty move to the top of the track and drive to the lead as VanGilder and Anderson followed, and Mike Knutson was closely behind in fourth.

Doughty began to stretch his advantage when the race was brought to a halt after a Jake Froemke breakdown which led to a small fire under his car. Back under green, it was Doughty leading the way to the checkered flag as VanGilder and Parker Anderson rounded out the top three. A side by side battle for fourth was won by Eric Riley over Knudtson at the line.

The Midwest Modifieds began their feature but after a crash on the start which collected multiple cars, the field restarted and ran only one lap before the rains began to fall. The night was called due to the weather and the Midwest Modified, Pure Stocks, and Hornets features were postponed to another night. The results will be posted at that time.

The Red Cedar Speedway returns to action on Friday, May 10, 2019, as the WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Hornets along with the Limited Late Models take the track. There will be no WISSOTA Late Models on the race card.
